You can’t improve what you don’t measure

Cricket is a statisticians dream. Every aspect of a cricketer's performance is measured by statistics. The great players are often separated from the good players based on statistics.

For those that did not get a chance to witness the great Don Bradman bat, the only way they know he was perhaps the best batsman that ever lived was in is amazing batting average of 99.94.

You can't improve what you don't measure.

Regardless of what level of cricket you play, tracking your performance is a key element in improving your game.

Statistics can be used to find weak spots in your game.

  • Economy rate through the roof? Learn to bowl more economically.
  • Batting strike rate too low? Learn to play more aggressively or turn the strike over more regularly.

crictrack.jpgYou can track your own stats with a free to use website called Crictrack. Batting, bowling and fielding statistics are tracked and calculated on a game by game basis, allowing you to build up your career statistics.

If you are not already doing so, get tracking, get identifying your strengths and weaknesses and watch your performance improve.

The only problem I have with statistics and these trackers is that they do not take the conditions of play for example, bad wicket, wrong decisions, quality of opposition, etc.

Agreed, but what other option is there?

This article is very valid and maintaining stats is extremely useful.

My Div 4 team is starting the league season soon. I have built an MS Access database to track all our stats and created some reports off it. Have been tracking performance of our team in the friendlies we have been playing. Its astonishing how much better analysis of players' performance I can do now. Helps me in team selection and also in giving feedback to players on their performance. This is so much better than last year when we only kept the scoresheets and had no way of determining player performance over the season. All analysis had to be done based on info I "remembered".

What kind of analysis do you do Rahul?

Hi Rahul. I am very interested to know what kind of analysis and what sort of system you use. Can you elaborate?
