Coach of the Month: Matt Thompson
Matt Thompson is the PitchVision Coach of the Month
Matt is a young coach working his way up and building a fine reputation with innovative ideas and a progressive teaching style. He is currently at Millifield School in England.
A talented player, Matt nevertheless was always into coaching and began his career early at just 15, helping out with Devon youngsters even while still working his way through the minor county set up. He passed his ECB Level 2 at 16 and was assistant coach for Devon Under 16s when he was just 18. Quite the prodigy in coaching terms!
Despite success at club and minor county level, Matt never realised his dream of becoming a professional cricketer, but knew his future was in cricket and so turned to coaching, quickly achieving his Club Coach award (now ECB Level 3).
After school - yes, Matt was still a schoolboy while moving up the ranks - he took a degree in Sports Coaching, covering several sports including cricket, football and tennis. His final stop so far was his move into coaching young cricketers at Millfield School, one of the premier cricket schools in England.
Matt describes his coaching philosophy as "big picture". Naturally he wants to develop great techniques and tactics in his charges. Yet, he also sees his role as helping players on a journey from youngster to adulthood: Building good habits, decision making, communication and simply being a "good bloke" as well as a good cricketer.
When Matt talks cricket, he talks about it through a lens of an open mind and creativity. He's determined to help players find a way that works for them.
With his passion, meteoric rise up the ranks and progressive mindset, Matt Thompson is Coach of the Month.
