Quick Tip: Will Boxing Increase Bowling Speed?
Here is a question Regan posted on facebook:
"Do you think boxing will increase bowling speed? I thought because it's training your rotator cuff to fire quickly that it might increase the speed."
The answer to that question is both complex and simple. And as this is a quick tip, I'm going to give you the shortcut first.
Boxing will help with bowling speed a little, but it's not the magic pill to being able to hurl the ball down at 150kph.
Which, as you are already thinking, is really dodging the saying "yes" or "no".
Why can't I catagorically say one way or the other?
That's the complex part.
Bowlers are different both physically and mentally. So what works for you may not work for the next guy or girl at nets.
You might love boxing, you might it relaxing and it builds your confidence to know you could punch a mugger in the face.
All those skills are skills you can use as a fast bowler too.
And boxing will get you fitter, stronger and teach you how to use the ground to put more energy into something (a punch, or a cricket ball).
On the other hand, if you hate the idea of boxing you can skip it and use other methods to get the same result. Medicine ball throws, weighted ball bowling, traditional weight training; the list goes on.
Boxing is one method and one that will help.
But it's not essential.
The real magic is in getting a bowling action that uses every inch of your power then staying fit enough to use it.
