My cricket fitness mission to Cardiff
Yesterday I was let out to travel to the swish David Lloyd club in Cardiff. I was there to interview Rob Ahmun, the Strength and Conditioning coach for Glamorgan County Cricket Club.
For a fitness geek like me it was a dream way to spend 45 minutes.
In the plush country club style surroundings we talked about the challenges of fitness in cricket, especially dealing with professional players in a sport with such all-consuming and ever-changing time constraints. Rob's a passionate guy and he clearly knows his stuff inside out.
It's a different world from that inhabited by use mere club players.
Mainly we got together to discuss writing articles for the serious strength and conditioning site at strengthcoach.com. The programs are for elite level players who train a couple of times a day. If you are a professional cricketer, have a genuine chance of becoming one or a strength coach by trade I highly recommend the site. It does cost money though and it's less useful for club players, especially of you have no background in the anatomical/physiological terms.
Would you be interested in hearing about this kind of elite stuff on harrowdrive too? I suspect not but please let me know if you do.
What about club cricket fitness?
We didn't cover much club stuff. Rob deals with the pros. I did have a few questions answered on these topics:
- selecting cricket specific exercises
- planning programs for a long season
- how to train in season
- preventing injury
- working out the fitness demands of the game when there has been so little research
All this can be transferred to serious club players, even with limited time to train. I'm hoping the harrowdrive case studies will feel the benefit of this.
What does this mean to you? If you are a serious about improving your game with fitness training then I hope you will keep trusting me as your filter to better strength, power and work capacity.
In summary, even more tips are on the way. Stay tuned.
