Liam Plunkett’s daily fitness routine
Magazine articles can be a right tease. A recent article in Spin magazine gave an insight into Liam Plunkett's training and preparation for the Ashes tour.
But being a short article means it's difficult to put the workouts into any kind of context so it becomes frustrating.
So here is some flesh on those bones.
Monday: An hour of swimming followed by three hours of nets.
Tuesday: Spinning and swimming followed by a weights session.
Wednesday: Off
Thursday: Fitness training with Durham CCC
Friday: Fitness training with Durham CCC
A few things strike me from the limited information in the article:
- This is a high intensity, pre-tour training week that would be impossible to keep up all year round.
- The strength part of the workout is for maintenance. You are not going to get any stronger following this plan.
- There is a lot of non-specific conditioning training. This could be because of fear of injury and the England guys are already cricket specific fit.
- You have to be pretty fit already to even attempt it.
Overall, Liam's week is great for him, but he is a high performance athelete. Club players don't have the time or fitness levels to follow so this isn't a great workout for you. It's too intense, non-specific and focused on conditioning over strength.
