Leg Spin Bowling Lesson #2: How to Get Better, Faster

This lesson focuses on ways to get from being an average bowler to a high quality one in minimal time.

In the last email, we talked about practicing by bowling a lot of overs. (You can go back over the details of how many overs per week to bowl by watching the video again if you like.)

And overs are all important because according to researchers, to master any skill takes around 10 years. It’s been shown to be true for everything from learning a violin to playing chess to playing tennis. Everything takes about 10 years to go from beginner to world-class. In leg spin terms; that means bowling a lot of overs.

It means a lot of trial and error and a lot of failure along the way. Most leg spinners give up way before the 10 year mark. It’s not surprising. Practicing that hard for that long is painful. Fingers get sore, bodies get tired, and you are not appreciated by the captain or respected by opposition batsmen.

Why would anyone do that to themselves?

Truth is, most simply don’t.

But they are the ones who don’t know that you can speed things up. You can get success even at the early and middle stages of learning leg spin. It’s possible to take wickets, improve standards and get noticed by selectors.

You see the magic isn’t in how much you practice.

There is no mystical power to 10 years.

Most bowlers waste a lot of those 10 years. They bowl in a match and get slogged in the nets once a week. It takes forever to work out a method because they have to try everything before they find the one thing that actually works.

The real power is in HOW you practice.

Using a simple method a spinner can move forward much quicker because the guesswork is removed. You are learning with every single ball you bowl. And when nothing goes to waste, skill development happens super-fast.

So how do you do it?
  1. Use a method designed to improve a skill. Bowling in the nets against sloggers or playing matches are not specifically designed to improve accuracy, or turn or dip.
  2. Repeat the activity as much as possible. As we know, it takes 40-100 balls a week. And that’s just for one element of the skill.
  3. Get instant feedback. If you bowled through a curtain, only focusing on perfecting technique and had no idea where the ball went after you released it, what would happen? You would probably get bored and you certainly would not improve. So use a drill that gives you feedback that is not open to debate. Either it hit the length or it didn’t. Either it dipped and turned or it didn’t.
  4. Adjust as you go along. Using the instant feedback from the well-designed drill you can make the necessary technical changes you need as you go along. It helps if a coach is on hand, but even if there is no coach the drill, the amount of effort and the instant feedback is enough.

And that’s it. Not rocket science but simply hard and well directed work.

But of course you need to know what the best methods are.

Which is why the online course Leg Spin: How to Defeat Your Mid-Career Crisis exists. The course provides the drills needed to practice in a deliberate way.  They are proven techniques from an experienced leg spin coach.
