Cricket Without Boundaries are Recruiting for the Experience of a Lifetime
Cricket Without Boundaries - the UK cricket development and AIDS awareness charity - are looking for volunteers to Africa in 2016. PitchVision caught up with Head of Recruitment, Holly Colvin to find out more.
Holly played for England for 8 years, taking 174 wickets in 127 matches before taking a break from International cricket to help with the charity. When we spoke, she was clearly excited to share her story and help others gain the same experience: Travelling to Africa to bring smiles to the faces of hundreds of schoolchildren.
In 2012, Holly volunteered herself and saw first hand the work of the charity. Visiting African countries twice a year to provide cricket coaching to teachers and schoolchildren, alongside HIV education. The two week trip was filled with fun, challenge and cricket. As Holly said herself, "we worked hard and played hard". Years on, the trips continue.
Currently the charity is looking for volunteers for trips in 2016.
After CWB provide training, you'll head out to Africa to teach teachers how to coach cricket, before moving onto school session with children at both primary and secondary age who have had little experience with cricket.
And speaking of experience, you don't need to be a cricket coach to come on the trip. All the skills you need are a willingness to get stuck in and adaptability. It's why CWB attracts not just cricketers, but also teachers, gap year students and the retired. Holly even told the story of a couple who volunteered together despite one of the pair knowing nothing about cricket!
You can make a huge difference. For some children, Holly said, simply having the chance to play an organised game is a thrill. Equally you can make a difference to a community through spreading the positive HIV awareness messages through coaching. There is no doubt you will pick up life skills and professional skills through the volunteering.
