Cricket South Africa PitchVision Coach of the Year Awards Nominees
The Cricket South Africa PitchVision Coach of the Year Awards is an annual celebration of the best coaches in the country, and around the world.
Coaches at every level are assessed by an expert panel of players, coaches and journalists. The panel pick winners for mini-cricket, semi-professional, RPC and HUBS, and franchise levels. This makes sure every coach has a chance to be recognised, whatever level they are working.
Franchise Coach of the Year Nominations
Nicky Boje - VKB Knights
Nico “Nicky” Boje (born 20 March 1973) is a South African cricketer who played in 43 Tests and 115 One Day Internationals for South Africa, and attended Grey College in Bloemfontein. He is currently coaching the VKB Knights cricket team in the Free State, South Africa.
Nicky Boje’s all-round ability and knowledge of the game has no doubt been a great asset to the Knights franchise for the 2016/17 season.
Boje’s team had a good season, where they managed to win the coveted Sunfoil Series 4 day competition. The VKB Knights also made it to the play offs of the Momentum One Day Cup Competition, before losing to the Warriors who went on to meet the Multiply Titans in the final.
Mark Boucher - Multiply Titans
Mark Verdon Boucher (born 3 December 1976) is a former South African cricketer, who holds the record for the most Test dismissals by a wicket-keeper. He has represented Border, South Africa, Africa XI, ICC World XI and Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. He had been a regular feature of the South African side since the 1997/1998 tour to Australia, until his retirement from international cricket in July 2012 after a serious eye injury against Somerset.
Mark Boucher was appointed the Titans Cricket Coach at the start of the 2016/17 season and made a fantastic start to his coaching career by coaching the Multiply Titans to win the CSA T20 challenge, also winning the Momentum One Day Cup and finishing a in 2nd place in the Sunfoil Series 4 Day Competition.
Malibongwe Maketa - Warriors
Malibongwe “Mali” Maketa (born 6 October 1980) is a former South African cricketer who represented Border in South African domestic cricket. He is the current head coach of the Warriors franchise.
Maketa was born in Port Elizabeth, and raised in King William’s Town, where he attended Dale College. A former South Africa under–15s representative, he made his sole first-class appearance for Border in October 2001, in a Supersport Series match against Free State. Maketa played a further two seasons for Border B, but never returned to the senior line-up. After the conclusion of his playing career, Maketa began coaching at school level, with his first position being at Western Province Preparatory School. Entering the domestic set-up, he was appointed assistant coach to the Titans franchise for the 2006–07 season (under head coach Richard Pybus), and in May 2008 was named head coach of the Northerns provincial team. He switched to the Warriors franchise in 2013, as assistant to Piet Botha, and on Botha’s resignation in December 2014 was appointed acting head coach. He was permanently appointed to the position in February 2015, becoming only the third black head coach of a franchise team. In September 2015, Maketa gained his level-four coaching certificate from Cricket South Africa, the highest qualification available in the country.
The Warriors had a season of mixed fortunes with notable performances making it all the way to the final of the CSA T20 Challenge where they lost to the Multiply Titans. Maketa also lead the Warriors to the final of the Momentum One day Cup Competition where they again lost to the rampant Multiply Titans.
