Fielding Drill: Captain America Catching

Here's a simple, fun drill you can use to help improve your reaction catching in areas like the slips, short leg, gully or even in the ring behind square.

You can view the drill here:

It's named after the comic book superhero, Captain America because someone uses a Katchet as a "shield" to deflect the ball in random positions from one side to another.

  • The fielders split into two lines facing each other, with someone standing in the middle holding a Katchet fielding ramp.
  • The ball is thrown towards the middle player, who deflects the ball off the ramp to the other side.
  • The player catches it, and throws it back, the game keeps going.

You'll need spare balls, and fielders with good attention! You can make it a game between sides to ramp up the pressure, competition and fun.

One important tip is to make sure players change place in the line up to get catches from different angles.

If you have a brave and skilful Katchet player, she can kneel down to better reflect low catches. That one needs very good feeds and probably a helmet on the Katchet player.
