Case Study Profile: Matt
Matt is captain, opening bowler and lower order biffer for a side in the West Sussex Cricket League. He is in his mid 30s and last year averaged 16 with the bat and 24 with the ball taking 12 wickets in 13 games. He has recently dropped down a level to captain and improve standards but last year things did not go his way personally or as a team. This season he wants to turn the team round from a bottom side to win promotion.
Mental Skills
Matt has a large goal for the season and I want to help him make this even more real for him in two ways. First to help him develop as clear a picture as possible of the perfect outcome for the season. Second to work backwards from this creating a series of steps to help both him and the team achieve it. Linked closely to this is the way Matt deals with both his own mistakes and the errors of others. This can be managed better by Matt and we will work together to establish ways to do this.
Fitness
Matt trains regularly by running, swimming and playing sport. I would like to see more strength and mobility work in his training and will show him ways to add this. This type of training is more cricket specific. I would also like to turn his running sessions into agility sessions to continue his workouts but also develop fast feet.
Nutrition
Matt eats a healthy non-meat diet based mainly around natural whole foods – fruit, fish, nuts and seeds. This is an excellent base to work from. I would like him to eat more vegetables and get more protein. Currently he eats less than I would expect for a man, especially as he works out. He may not be getting all the essential nutrients he needs because of this.
