4 Tips for all-rounders that work

all rounder paul collingwood training

Kelvin is a club cricket all rounder. Like many other players he is motivated to take his game to the next level.

He sent me an email to ask my advice:

I'm 17 years old and 6'4. I'm considered an all-rounder and have played in the top Malaysian League. However, I still want to improvemy game as I know there are many things I can do better.

I have never seen Kelvin play, so I can't answer his specific questions very well, but as long as he keep these basic principles in mind he will not go far wrong:

  1. Practice. It may seem like an obvious thing to say, but at the age of 17 you can easily play cricket 5-6 times a week. If you have buddies to train with then setup game situations: Even in the nets. If you can only train on your own try this. The real key to good practice is to focus on your goals. For example, Kelvin is having problems driving. Instead of just having a general net, he can train his driving by being fed half volley length balls, practicing picking the right length to drive and work on his timing.
  2. Improve your fitness. The fitter you are, the better you are - the quicker your reactions, the longer you can last, the harder you can hit and the faster you can bowl. Make sure you are working on your fitness through interval training, SAQ training and body weight exercises.
  3. Train your mind. Cricket is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. Train yourself to get the right attitude.
  4. Get a cricket brain. An awareness of tactics, an understanding of situations and a creative, attacking approach will get you runs and wickets. Become a student of the game, even if you are not captain.

What other advice would you give to Kelvin? He also wants to know how to bowl outswing and improve his pace. Leave a comment or get in touch.

[...] Seam bowling all-rounder Kelvin has been back in touch with me. You may remember he asked me some coaching questions a little while back. He now has a run up problem which I hope to solve for him. [...]

Hi.today you need to be an allrounder rather then just bowl or bat or keep the wickets. Its easier to beat the competition as there are hardly any genuine allrounders. The question is that for a good batsman who wants to develop an allrounder ability , is it better to be a spineer or a pacer. It is for a young kid i know who is 10 years of age and has tremendous batting skills. He came to me for an advise as i m his uncle. Before giving him any advise.....i would like to take some opinion here. He has never bowled. He says that he can try both and then decide which is better....But my concern is that spin would be a better option as it involves less strenous routine then the pacer.

Why choose so early? At 10 he can easily do both and decide later which he prefers. Garfield Sobers did both at Test level!

hi is it true that you get more chances if you are an all rounder. and is it good to be an all rounder i didnt know if it was because of the injurys or does it make you get more selction in teams.
